EXPLORE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Joining Barnabas Center as a volunteer offers a fantastic opportunity to contribute meaningfully to your community. As Nassau County continues to expand, the demand for assistance among our neighbors is also increasing. By getting involved at our food pantry, helping out at our New to You Resale Store or volunteering in our medical offices, you can use your time to create a significant impact.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Q. What happens after I submit my volunteer application?

Within five business days of applying, you will receive an invitation link from Barnabas Center to complete a background screening. A processing fee of $16.50 is required if you apply to be a regular volunteer. If you are court-ordered, there is a processing fee of $33.00. If you live outside of the United States, pricing may differ based on the country of citizenship due to search and access fees. You’ll receive an invoice from Barnabas Center requesting payment. Once it is paid, we will do the background check and notify you of the results.

If you are a minor, please pick up a Background Check: Parental Consent Form for a Minor from the main Barnabas Center office at 1303 Jasmine St., Fernandina Beach. If you would like this form emailed to you, please reach out to Trish Thompson at (904) 261-7000 x 118 or [email protected]

It will take approximately 5–7 business days to clear your background check. Then, our community engagement manager, Trish Thompson, will contact you to schedule your orientation. If you have any questions beforehand, you can reach her at (904) 261-7000 x 118 or [email protected]

High school students volunteering to fulfill school service hours must have parent/guardian approval to apply. The parent/guardian must also attend orientation with their child. Volunteer service options for students are only available at the New to You Resale Store or Food Pantry.

We ask that you please indicate your offense on the application. If you participated in Teen Court, be sure to note that as well. If your background screening is approved you will need to bring your photo ID, court documents, probation officer’s contact information and a community service log to onboarding.

All service hours must be completed at our New to You Resale Store unless otherwise instructed. Your community service log must be presented at the start of each shift and signed both when you arrive and when you leave or take a break/lunch.

The following offenses will automatically disqualify a volunteer applicant:

  • Felony crimes against family
  • Sex-related offenses
  • Child-related offenses
  • Theft, robbery or burglary
  • Fraud-related crimes
  • Crimes against persons or property

Other offenses may result in disqualification at Barnabas Center’s discretion. Factors considered include:

  • Nature and severity of the offense
  • Time elapsed since the incident
  • Evidence of rehabilitation (e.g., community standing, employment, references)

All service hours must be completed at our New to You Resale Store unless otherwise instructed. Your community service log must be presented at the start of each shift and signed both when you arrive and when you leave or take a break/lunch.

If you need to complete five to 30 service hours, please apply at least one month before your hours are due. If you need 31 or more hours, please apply at least two months before your hours are due.
