The Rotary Clubs Hosts Countywide Food Drive to Restock Barnabas Food Pantry

Did you know that 9 percent of residents in our Nassau County community are hungry or facing food insecurity, which is simply not knowing when or how they will get their next meal?

The county’s three Rotary Clubs are partnering with Barnabas to collect healthy food donations on September 3-10 at more than 100 countywide, drop-off locations. The effort will restock Barnabas Center’s Nutrition Services food pantry.

“We are building on last year’s successful food drive. Our goal this year is to collect 25,000 pounds or more, preferably low-sodium, low-fat and low-sugar products,” said Michael Granucci, a longtime Barnabas volunteer who is again heading up the food drive and a Rotary Club of Amelia Island Sunrise member. “The Barnabas pantry needs these donations to help meet the tremendous, continued need for food in our county.”

Businesses, churches, schools, civic groups, neighborhoods and municipalities are providing drop-off locations for donations. On September 3-10, donors can drop off their unexpired, nonperishable items, including canned, boxed and dry foods; paper goods such as paper towels, toilet paper and paper napkins; and dry or canned pet foods. For a list of the drop-off locations, visit https://barnabasnassau.org/2022rotaryfooddrive/.

“This year we are extending the donation drop-off time to Sunday, September 11 for churches so those folks have two Sundays to collect food,” said Granucci. “Food items will be collected from all other locations and brought to Barnabas on September 10, and the church pickups will be on September 12.”

Barnabas Center President and CEO Jamie Reynolds said, “We are deeply thankful for Michael and all of the Rotary volunteers, plus all of the drop-off site hosts and many other volunteers involved in this large-scale food drive. Nassau County is filled with incredibly caring and giving people who believe that when we all work together, amazing things happen.”

Barnabas Center extends a special thanks to the Rotary Club of Amelia Island Sunrise, Rotary Club of Fernandina Beach and Greater Nassau Rotary Club for coordinating this effort.
