Barnabas Nassau County, FL

food_hub-circlesFood Programs & Partners

We operate the largest food pantry in Nassau County, providing emergency food to individuals and families experiencing hunger, uncertain food supplies, and challenges with basic dietary needs. Our staff and volunteers collect donated fresh, frozen, packaged, and canned food and distribute it to people in need throughout the county. Through generous donations, we have recently been able to expand our programs to include fresh foods, nutritional education, and a teaching kitchen.

The face of hunger in Nassau County includes working families, children, and the elderly – our neighbors. It is estimated that 1 of 6 adults and 1 of 4 children in our community is hungry or facing food-insecurity, which is simply not knowing when or how they will get their next meal. The largest growing population experiencing hunger or food insecurity is working families, “ordinary” people who work hard and live on an income that can’t stretch from paycheck to paycheck. The reduction in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps) that took effect in 2013 has had an impact on the individuals and families we serve. Thus, more people need our help.

At our main Food Pantry at the Weaver Center (our main office) in Fernandina Beach, we can provide a three-day supply of food (approximately 30 pounds) every 30 days to those in need. The food follows the nutritional “plate” to ensure a balance of protein, vegetables and fruit, and carbohydrates. In addition to our main Food Pantry, we also provide bags of food to individuals and families seeking assistance at our Callahan satellite office. Each year, our Food Pantry provides over 100,000 pounds of food to Nassau County residents with incomes at or below the 200% poverty level.

Community Partnerships

Community Partnerships are vital to our effectiveness. Read below to see how our loyal and enthusiastic supporters come together to help those experiencing hunger in Nassau County.

Hunger Coalition of Nassau County

Partners :  Nourishment Network, local churches, volunteers, Advanced Disposal (waste management)

We have taken a leadership role in addressing hunger and food insecurity in Nassau County, by forming and coordinating the efforts of the Hunger Coalition of Nassau County since 2011.

Community Meal Programs

nassau humane societyOur Food Pantry has developed a new partnership with the Nassau County Humane Society (NCHS) in which the NCHS provides pet food for dog and cat owners who often must choose between feeding their pets or their families. Donated pet food is distributed through the Barnabas pantry to those in need.

“Cooking Matters”

Partners : Local professional chefs & nutrition educators, Florida Introduces Physical Activity & Nutrition to Youth (FLIPANY)

cooking mattersWe have implemented a cooking-based nutrition education program designed to teach low-income families how to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a limited budget. Professional chefs and nutrition educators volunteer their time and expertise to lead hands-on classes in our new teaching kitchen that show adults how to purchase and prepare nutritious foods in healthful, safe, and tasty ways. This can mean the difference between feeding families for just one night and making sure they have the knowledge, skills, and resources to prepare healthy meals for a lifetime.

“One Can” Monthly Food Drive

Partners: Emma Love Hardee and Southside Elementary Schools

wagonStudents from these schools demonstrate it’s possible for people of any age to make a positive, meaningful and lasting difference in their community. This monthly food drive began in September 2009 and has resulted in thousands of pounds of food being collected for our Food Pantry. The initiative is supported by the school principals and raises awareness about the fact that each student knows someone who experiences hunger on a regular basis, and it may be the child sitting next to him or her in class.

Food Drives

Partners :  US Post Office, churches, clubs, schools, businesses and organizations

USPS food driveWe are a recipient of food collected through the US Post Office Food Drive held in May Nassau County each year. In 2013 alone, numerous food drives and donations resulted in 321,276 total pounds of food distributed to 6,032 households in Nassau County.
